In a inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” the metropolis, declaring “a different age” and an audacious beginning to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring suggestions to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”

Adhering to Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my ideals for concern of being called radical,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A experiment of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Challenges

The new mayor also faces concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Basic Challenges of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering basic services: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and ensuring reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
