Much like the recent storm tore through the north-west the previous evening, City blew the visitors away at the Etihad Stadium. It was a statement 3-0 win for their manager's side thanks to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a display that firmly established their leadership claims as they strengthened their standing at the WSL pinnacle.

Successive Defeats for Manchester United

This outcome marked back-to-back league losses for Marc Skinner’s side for the initial occasion since May 2024, leaving them a sizable gap off the table toppers with their title hopes hanging by a thread.

The Red Devils' ability to manage league and continental soccer with a limited team has been a frequently analyzed issue since they earned a place in the European competition. Looking at the schedule, it always appeared this was the period that would seriously challenge this fortitude. Sadly for the opposition, they appeared weary throughout, the landmark win against the French side clearly having had an impact.

Lineup Adjustments

The United manager had attempted to rotate the squad with a handful of adjustments. Ella Toone, Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all added freshness, although the omission of the high-performing Malard to the bench caused surprise.

Dominant First Half

Former Manchester City player Park came closest, rattling the woodwork, but the away team were offensively poor and were unable to register a solitary shot on goal.

The hosts, in contrast, could have extended their cushion when a superb Miedema through ball sent Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it did not affect the result to the hosts. Previously unable to overcome any team who finished above them in the prior term, Jeglertz’s side now have victories against Arsenal and United to put them in a commanding standing after the opening fixtures.
