Coordinated British-French Airstrike Strikes Islamic State Munitions Store in the Syrian region
British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.
The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several entry passages providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.
There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.
IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This action shows our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.
RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.
"I want to thank every member of our armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of thousands of British personnel stationed over the holidays. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, shows how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."
Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, after an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
