Astronaut Shares Mental Health Struggle Following Deluge of Backlash Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also included high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a online statement, referring to a phone call from a mission companion in the days following the landing.

She described the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her studies and years of training to the historic significance of her heritage – was buried under the tide of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Months following reaching space, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the followers whose kindness pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she said.

She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had emerged from the flight, such as spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The computer-piloted spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
