A minimum of 13 people killed and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.
A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its role in national projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
