A bettor profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was officially announced, sparking debate about potential gains made from confidential information of American actions.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the month's conclusion surged in the hours before Donald Trump declared on the weekend that Maduro had been apprehended.

One account, which joined the platform recently and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Platform data shows that users estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

But the odds had climbed to 11% by late Friday night and surged in the first hours of January 3rd, suggesting a rapid movement in betting activity right before the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," commented an industry expert.

A handful of other traders also earned significant sums from similar wagers.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Politicians are starting to take note.

A new rule put forward on the start of the week seeks to ban government employees from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the past few years, with traders able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to politics.

The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting industry.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
